Super Mario Bros creator Shigeru Miyamoto thinks the PS Vita needs more games. Speaking with Edge in Paris, Miyamoto said Sony's handheld platform is a cool machine, but that making a neat gadget isn't enough to make a console stick.

""It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it," says Miyamoto. "But I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."

Hardware sales for the Vita have been dropping since the platform's launch, both in the US and Japan. The 3DS, on the other hand, has been steadily gaining ground since last summer's infamous price drop. The result, in part, of the platform's steadily growing software library.

Miyamoto admitted that the he felt the 3DS' poor launch lineup played a large role in the console's initial struggle. "We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realize the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."

The Vita was supported by a strong set of games at launch, but hasn't released many since. Like the 3DS, however, releases are trickling onto the burgeoning console, including Resistance: Burning Skies later this month and Gravity Rush in early June.
