Once the smoke clears from yet another summer filled with prequels, sequels, and explosions, we can finally get back to the art of cinema again in the fall. And one of the biggest films to come out in the latter part of 2012 will be Paul Thomas Anderson’sThe Master. Surrounded by controversy, and shrouded in mystery, this movie stars Jaoquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. Not much is known about the plot of the film, but it’s apparently going to involve Hoffman as an L. Ron Hubbard-esque leader of an offbeat religion of sorts.

This latest trailer for the movie finally gives us our first glimpse at Hoffman as The Master, and he’s every bit as entrancing as we had hoped. It’s hard not to watch this and see the relationship to Hubbard’s own philosophies, but we're sure Anderson won't beat us over the head with it. The real highlight here is the interplay he has with Phoenix's character, which looks to be the backbone of the picture.

There really hasn’t been enough footage released to get a true handle on how all of this plays out. And honestly, that is a good thing. This is the type of film that doesn’t need to be spoiled months ahead of time in trailers and clips. Just watch Anderson’s beautifully minimalistic style on display here, and wait for the movie’s release.

The Master will debut on October 12.
