Square-Enix announced today that Final Fantasy III will be ported to Ouya when the console is released next March. The publisher says they plan to follow up with downloadable content after the game's initial release.

Developers have begun announcing projects supporting the "hackable", Android-based Ouya after ex-Infinity Ward creative director Robert Bowling announced an Ouya-exclusive prequel to Robotoki's first project, Human Element.

Final Fantasy III, initially released in Japan on the Famicom in 1990, didn't make it to North America until it was remade for the Nintendo DS in 2006. The western version, which came with a major visual overhaul, has since been ported to iOS and was just released on Android late last month.

As the Ouya team points out on the console's Kickstarter, the Ouya version will be the first version of the game released outside of Japan that is optimized to be played on a TV.
