When it was announced that Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson would be turning their adaptation of The Hobbit into two films rather than one, a lot of people were skeptical about whether or not it would work. And if you were uncertain about it becoming two movies, this latest move will really have you confused. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jackson has come to the conclusion that he actually wants to turn The Hobbit into a trilogy.

We're not certain how Jackson is going to turn one book of average length into three films, but if anyone can do it, it's Jackson. The site is reporting that if deals can be worked out with all of the actors and crew, then filming will take place in New Zealand for an additional two months next summer where supplemental footage will be shot in order to make an another movie.

We don't know what kind of material Jackson will actually shoot for this, but Hobbit writer J.R.R. Tolkien had so many additional stories and appendices set in that world that another movie could easily be found somewhere.

But time is not on the production's side as of now, and one source told the site, "If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for release on December 14, 2012 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again is set to hit theaters on December 13, 2013.
