According to Deadline, executives at Warner Bros. are preparing to receive a new script for the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and within two weeks the studio will decide whether or not to move forward with the series. Javier Bardem is no longer attached to the film as once rumored, but director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer are now looking at Russell Crowe to fill the main role of Roland Deschain, the mysterious anti-hero of the story.

If the studio gives the project the go-ahead, the entire Dark Tower series will be told during the course of three movies and two limited run TV series. And having Russell Crowe as the lead would make the entire project a much easier sell for the studio, which doesn’t want to invest much time and money into an unproven property if it didn’t have an established star attached. But obviously nothing is confirmed yet, and it will be interesting to see if the studio takes a gamble on what could be its successor to the Lord of the Rings franchise.
