Now that we know that Peter Jackson has expanded his planned Hobbit saga from two films to three, Coming Soon is reporting that the titles of the movies have been shuffled around a bit. Earlier in production, the second film was going to be titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, but that will now be the title of the newly-announced third film. The second movie will instead be called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Smaug was the dragon in the original book, so the title gives us a hint of when to expect that epic battle to take place.

The site is also reporting that The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released on July 18, 2014 – a mere seven months after the second installment. We don’t know how Jackson will stretch one book into three movies just yet, but the director has said that he will also be incorporating J.R.R. Tolkien’s notes and annotations into the project in order to bolster the length. Just to refresh your memory, here is how The Hobbit trilogy will be released:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – December 14, 2012

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – December 13, 2013

The Hobbit: There and Back Again – July 18, 2014

We’ll keep you updated as news and details about the three movies get released.
