It’s never easy for an actor to put their own spin on a legendary character, but that’s exactly what young Freddie Highmore has been tasked with as Deadline is reporting that he has been cast as Norman Bates in the upcoming Psycho prequel TV series from A&E.

Titled Bates Motel, this series will take a look at the relationship between Norman and his mother before the events of Alfred Hitchcock’s original movie. Vera Farmiga (The Departed) will play Norma Bates, Norman’s mother, who is also the twisted motivation for her son’s later actions.

After Hitchcock’s original Psycho hit theaters in 1960, a series of sequels came out in an attempt to give more life to the franchise; however, none of them managed to live up to the lofty standards of the original. We’ll see if Bates Motel can succeed where those movies failed as we get more information on the project in the coming months.
