The Twitch video game community has raised $1.5 million for charity, spearheading a new outlet for philanthropists the world around.
Twitch will be continuing to help charities by promoting Extra Life 2012, the biggest one day gaming event benefiting the Children's Miracle Network. Gamers will raise funds over the course of one massive 24 hour gaming session hosted by the Extra Life group. Twitch hopes to marry the realms of spectator gaming and charity.
The American Cancer Society, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, Child’s Play, and the American Red Cross have all held successful charity campaigns on Twitch. So nothing to sneeze at when it comes to helping where help is needed.
“Charity drives have become increasingly popular on Twitch with one recent event even breaking half
million dollars,” said Emmett Shear, CEO of Twitch. “I'm always impressed by how compassionate the
gaming community can be when they have a cause and appreciate that they leverage our platform to
raise money for those in need. We continue to encourage giving in support of important causes, including
Extra Life 2012.”
As if all of this hasn't restored your faith in humanity, and the gaming community as a whole, Fearless Records and Razer gaming peripherals will be participating in the Extra Life 2012 event, as well. Razer will be giving away 25 of the Razer Death Adder mice a limited edition version of one of the world’s most popular gaming controllers.
Fearless Records will be donating play time with band members from Pierce The Veil, Blessthefall, The Word Alive, A Skylit Drive, Forever The Sickest Kids, and For All Those Sleeping as prizes to top donors.
