The now 13-year-old messaging service, Windows Live Messenger, will no longer be available starting 2013.

Microsoft is not completely closing the doors on its instant messaging service. With the various social network and mobile applications used to communicate, Microsoft is trying to sway its Messenger users to Skype. The voice-over-IP and chat service provides much better mobile support on an array of smartphones and tablets. Contacts in Windows Live Messenger can be imported directly into Skype during this transitional period.
