As of this past Thursday, the domestic box office total for 2012 passed $10.6 billion, which is significant because that marks the most money that the movie industry has ever made in a single year in the theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. This total beat out 2009’s $10.59 billion, which is an impressive feat considering the record-breaking Avatar was released that year.

Movies like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games, Skyfall, and Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 all added to 2012’s mammoth haul. However, there were plenty of smaller movies that performed well like Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, and Lincoln.

Given the sheer amount of blockbuster films that opened this year, 2012’s mark will be hard to be beat. 2013 boasts a few solid releases like Star Trek into Darkness, Iron Man 3, and Man of Steel, but it might not be until 2015 when Star Wars: Episode VII, Avengers 2, and Justice League hit theaters that this record will truly be challenged.
