According to Deadline, Denzel Washington will team up with director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) on a new movie titled The Equalizer. The film is based on the short-lived CBS drama that ran from 1985-1989. In it, Washington will play a quiet, solitary man who dedicates his life to helping victims of injustice. We’re not sure if Washington’s character will be a retired intelligence agent like the original TV show, but the main idea seems to still be intact.

This idea of a lone quasi-vigilante is similar in theme to Refn’s last movie, Drive, which featured Ryan Gosling as an unnamed driver who takes it upon himself to protect a mother and her child from the mob. With a name like Washington attached to the project, The Equalizer will likely be Refn’s most high-profile and expensive movie to date. His next film, Only God Forgives, is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
