As expected, new releases Les Misérables and Django Unchained ruled the box office yesterday in what was a majorly successful Christmas day for theaters across the nation. A Christmas miracle indeed.
Topping the charts with $18 million earned is Les Mis, which now holds the record for the second-biggest Christmas day opening for a film - behind 2009's Sherlock Holmes, which earned $24.6 million - as well as the records for best non-weekend Christmas day opening in history and best opening day for a musical film. As for Quentin Tarantino's newest flick, Django Unchained, that earned a whopping $15 million in the box office, big numbers for a 'R'-rated film released on Christmas. Additionally, the film earned an excellent 'A-' CinemaScore from viewers, and it may have broken the record for biggest opening of an 'R'-rated film on Christmas day.
Parental Guidance, which also opened on Christmas day, came in at the number four spot with $6.4 million total - which isn't bad, considering that early predictions last night had it earning about $5.5 million. The film also earned an 'A-' CinemaScore from audiences.
