"Illmuniati want my mind, soul and my body/Secret society, trying to keep their eye on me"—Prodigy, "I Shot Ya" (Remix)

Though Prodigy said that back in 1995, popular culture's fascination with the Illuminati has been at an all-time high for the past 5 years or so. One aspiring rapper took it entirely too far; he shot his friend under the false pretense that "sacrificing" him was the only way his rap career would take off. Last Thursday, a judge in Henrico County, VA scheduled a trial for Wafeeq Sabir El-Amin, who was convinced his offering to the secret society would lead to success.

El-Amin, 27, reportedly told his friend "You are my sacrifice" before firing a shot near the man's head in December. The bullet hit the man's hand, sending bone fragments into his eye. However, he was able to wrestle the gun away from El-Amin and shoot him once in the stomach before fleeing.

According to Deputy Commonwealth Attorney Thomas L. Johnson, the trial will dig deep into hip-hop culture and the theory that the happenings of the music industry are orchestrated by a secret society lurking in the shadows. In fact, the notion that a sacrifice must be made in order to join the Illuminati is what triggered El-Amin, no pun intended.

El-Amin says he has no memory of what occurred that fateful night.

According to a search warrant, over a pound of marijuana and information about the Illuminati's relationship with hip-hop were found in his home. Johnson says El-Amin is so frequently stoned that he had no memory of the shooting.

He's been charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and malicious wounding. He doesn't have any priors, but he was indicted by a grand jury earlier this year. The trial will be held on June 26 and 27.
