A report with crash data for January 2013 suggests that more pedestrians were killed in the year's opening month in New York City than any month in 2012. 28 people were killed in January, and by comparison, the highest monthly death toll for both cyclists and pedestrians was 17 in 2012.
Although 1,107 pedestrians and 190 cyclists were hurt in collisions with vehicles, because it was assumed that they would survive, the NYPD's Accident Investigation Squad elected not to pursue criminal investigations.
