Zach Braff started a Kickstarter campaign to fund Wish I Was Here, the sequel to his beloved/reviled 2004 film, Garden State, and it has already exceeded expectations. This little indie project raised over $2 million in four days; he still has 26 more days to go.

The Scrubs actor said he was inspired by the efforts of Veronica Mars fans to fund a movie. Lots of people have been complaining that this might give big studios the idea that they don't even have to pay to make a film anymore—fans can pay to get it filmed, and then pay to go see it.

A Veronica Mars movie probably wouldn't have gotten funding the usual route, so that's one thing. But Braff claims that although he did have a fancy studio deal lined up, "it would have involved making a lot of sacrifices I think would have ultimately hurt the film."

"Financing an independent film the traditional way often means having to give away your right to 'the final cut,' casting choices, location choices and cutting down your script to make it shoot-able on the cheapest budget possible," Braff wrote in his Kickstarter pitch.

So far over 30,000 people are backing the movie. It's not exactly a sequel, but a "spiritual sequel" to Garden State, but it's not clear how that will be different from, say, 2006's The Last Kiss. But, it looks like this thing is a go, and Braff is gonna be rolling in the dough.
