Audiences at the Cannes Film Festival are known for being rather, ahem, expressive. So it's not uncommon for films or people to get booed, right to their faces. How exciting!
Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn teamed up with Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives, another ultra-violent, short-on-dialogue film. It screened at Cannes this week and was met with booing from the audience. Apparently some people even walked out. Refn's response? "Oh, cool."
If only we could all be so nonchalant. "I mean, how can I expect someone to not react like this when on one hand you are dropping what you do in everyone’s face and at the same time saying, 'Love me, please,' you know? You’re going to get that," he said. "You know, great art—horrible thing to say—but art is meant to divide, because if it doesn’t divide, it doesn’t penetrate, and if it doesn’t penetrate, you just consume it."
Good for him for shrugging it off. Still, Gosling got a standing ovation when Drive premiered at Cannes in 2011, and Refn ended up winning the festival's Best Director award. Taxi Driver was booed at Cannes, too, though, so Refn said they're "in pretty good company then."
