What is it about Japanese Disney games? Capcom’s NES titles were some of the best platformers on the system. Kingdom Hearts was great (at least until the series went off the rails in a Lindelhof-level labyrinth of narrative nonsense). Castle of Illusion and its sequels were fan-favorites on Genesis, as well – probably because the production quality and animation were always a top priority.
That’s just one of the things that’s discussed in this behind-the-scenes video of the upcoming Castle of Illusion HD, developed by Sega Studios Australia with some oversight from the original game’s director, Emiko Yamato. Unlike most making-of videos, this one actually compares development of the original game to the remake (which by the way is looking very promising – kind of how Magical Mirror starring Mickey Mouse would have looked if it were a modern-day platformer rather than a very dated point-and-click adventure).
“We worked with the programmers to let us rebuild the system from the ground up to let us focus on the animations,” said Takashi Yuda, art director on the original Castle of Illusion. Once we got the animations where we wanted them we adjusted the character’s movements pixel by pixel for a better feel when the player controls him.”
Lots of cool little bits like that ahead. Check the video below.
