Surprising as it may be, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima was humbled by Ubisoft’s next-gen MMO The Division, citing the degree of freedom given to players to accomplish their goals in an interview with Japanese site 4Gamer. Though Metal Gear Solid V has received very high praise after this week’s E3 reveal, Kojima says he and his team have to push themselves even harder in order to live up to other global dev teams, using The Division’s response as a base of expectation.
“At E3 we’re fighting against the powerhouses of the whole world. At one time I thought I managed to win that battle with Metal Gear Solid 3,” Kojima said. “For that reason we gave ourselves the objective to ‘win the world once more’ with Metal Gear Solid V.”
MGSV’s open world was a result of a similar mentality, one where players could choose myriad ways to play the game, Kojima said. “I wanted to make this game allowing a million of different players to play in a million of different ways,“ he said.
