Satoru Iwata, Nintendo CEO and resident defender of its mobile devices - proved by punching an investor in the face when nagging about why Nintendo wasn't making smartphone games earlier this year - has a dropping approval rating of just above 77% and now he's explaining why Nintendo is making its games easier.
Iwata explains: "It may come as a shock to some of you that most gamers today cannot finish the original Super Mario Brothers game on the Famicom. We have conducted this test over the past few years to see how difficult we should make out games and have found that the number of people unable to finish the first level is steadily increasing."
"This year, around 90 percent of the test participants were unable to complete the first level of Super Mario Brothers. We did not assist them in any way except by providing the exact same instruction manual we used back then. Many of them did not read it and the few that did stopped after the first page which did not cover any of the game mechanics."
Iwata goes on to talk about the video replay process where gamers did not understand the basic mechanics, such as bottomless pits and collecting coins, "there were many other depressing things we noted but I cannot remember them at the moment."
During questions after playing the game, many players did not realize the game was old, they suggested updating graphics and adding voice acting and that the game needed weapons, like a sword.
So Nintendo has been forced by consumers to make their games easier in order to attract a wider audience. Iwata laments, "as a gamer, you might feel a little sad, and you should be. It is quite sad."
