After being closed by damage from Hurricane Sandy, the Statue of Liberty has reopened today for the 4th of July. The superstorm struck on Oct. 29, a day following the 126th anniversary of its dedication.
“We’re delighted to reopen the Statue of Liberty to the public, especially after something so major,” said Statue of Liberty National Monument spokesman John Warren. Warren added that the water, which covered 75 percent of the island and destroyed docks and pathways, did no damage to Lady Liberty or her perch.
With tourist season now in full swing, this is the perfect time to reopen the island. However, Ellis Island will still remain closed. According to officials, the repairs for both islands could cost up to $60 million.
