If you don't know recognize the name Dr. Luke, trust us, you'll recognize his work: This guy is responsible for most songs that have been radio hits in the recent years, including Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," Flo Rida's "Right Round," Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," and too many Katy Perry songs to count. That in mind, it actually makes a lot of sense that American Idol is considering him to fill the role of third judge in the new season, following Randy Jackson's departure last season.

According to Deadline, Dr. Luke is near "closing a deal" to sign on to the reality series, where he would join the already confirmed Keith Urban and the heavily rumored Jennifer Lopez at the judge's table.

Pursuing someone without wide name recognition might be a risky/confusing move for Idol, the same show that usually sticks to casting big names to reel in viewers, but Dr. Luke's experience does make him one of the more knowledgable judges American Idol has had in years, so it would be a refreshing choice. He knows what he's talking about. Plus—as Deadline points out—Fox took a gamble on Simon Cowell, who before American Idol was completely unknown in the states, and look how well that turned out.

Season 13 of Idol will premiere in January 2014.
