The buzz surrounding the changing of the Doctor Who guard has grown deafening, with Number Eleven, Matt Smith, set to depart after the December Christmas episode. Today on a live BBC One broadcast , Doctor twelve was finally announced, and it's a decidedly different choice from the thirty year old Smith.

Executive producer Steven Moffat announced that veteran actor Peter Capaldi, 55, will take over the TARDIS after Smith bows out. You may be familiar with Capaldi from the BBC Comedy series The Thick of It. He has also appeared in Skins, and most recently had a part in World War Z. - where he played a W.H.O (World Health Organization) doctor. Freaky. In a statement, Capaldi said: "Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.

The special also included both live and taped appearances from Smith, as well as Doctors five and six (Peter Davison and Colin Baker).
