"Lee Daniels' The Butler" Wins the Weekend Box Office Again

It wasn't an eventful weekend, though.

Even with new films like The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones being released this weekend, Lee Daniels' The Butler still managed to win the box office for a second weekend in a row. According to Deadline, the film managed to pull in a healthy $17 million this weekend, just ahead of third-week release We Are the Millers' $13.5 million. The Mortal Instruments, on the other hand, opened at a disappointing number three with $9.2 million earned.

This weekend was actually slow, overall: Total earnings only reached $90 million, which low considering The Mortal Instruments was touted as "the next Twilight," but it's still on par with last year's earnings.

Other new releases: The excellent new Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost collaboration, The World's End, opened at the number four spot with about $8.9 million earned in total, and the horror movie You're Next opened at number six with $7 million earned.
