After Insidious: Chapter 2 took the box office by storm this past weekend and winning the second-best September opening ever, it was only a matter of time before this happened: According to Indiewire, work is beginning on a third installment to the franchise, Insidious: Chapter 3, so studio execs can milk this cash cow for all it's worth.

When you look at the numbers for this thing, you really can't blame them: The first film, Insidious, was made for $1.5 million and, when released in 2011, went on to earn $97 million worldwide. Insidious: Chapter 2 was made for $5 million, and that's already earned $41.1 million—in just one weekend.

There's just one problem with this plan, however: Apparently, director James Wan won't back. In a recent interview with Moviefone, Wan stated that he was "finished" making horror movies, because he didn't want to be "put in a box" when it comes to what types of films he's known for making in Hollywood: "I'm going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. 'Conjuring' and 'Insidious 2' are my two last scary movies...Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you're know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I'm a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films." Wan is currently shooting Fast & Furious 7.

So, will the third sequel still move forward without him? It seems so—Leigh Whannell, who wrote the first two films, is set to return to write the third, and Jason Blum will return to produce as well.
