Most "Call of Duty" Players Aren't Core Gamers

Says developer Infinity Ward

Developer Infinity Ward, makers of the Call of Duty series, says that most of its players are casual gamers and Call of Duty is the only game they play.

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin told OXM why he didn't expect the arrival of a new generation of consoles to change the gameplay of the series. "We have an enormous amount of players who are more in the casual game space, but they play a lot."

"It's kind of a weird, ironic thing to say. They aren't hardcore gamers, or even gamers, but they play Call of Duty every night. And those guys are going to continue to play regardless of platform. So I think not only will we continue to engage with that existing player base, but we'll take next gen and see how far we can go with it."

Rubin relates Call of Duty to a sport, in that the rules can't be changed every year and maintain its audience. "There is the obvious truth that if this were football [soccer], and next year they decided we only want seven players a side and you can use your hands, I don't think people would want to go to many of those games."

So don't look for future COD games to be breaking any new ground but the gameplay is already super solid. More of the same, in this instance, might be a good thing. What do you think? The hardest core gamers we know are mostly COD gamers.

Infinity Ward's next installment in the series is Call of Duty: Ghosts on November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC with next-generation version coming as the consoles drop in November.
