We all love Brian DePalma. Not only is he the director that discovered Robert DeNiro (no, it wasn't Scorsese), but he is also the guy who brought the world such classics as Carlito's Way, The Untouchables, and Scarface. Another fantastic film in his distinguished slate is the 1973 screen adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie. The film garnered Oscar nominations for its stars, Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, and gained iconic status amongst horror fans everywhere.

But beneath its supernatural elements, Carrie, at its heart, is the story of a young girl trying to navigate through her teenage years. So, with all due respect to Mr. DePalma, wouldn't it make sense that a woman tell this story?

That's precisely what MGM and Screen Gems thought when making their new screen adaptation of the classic tale. So, they went out and secured one of the bravest, boldest female directors working today: Kimberly Pierce. Pierce is not your ordinary studio director; she is a fiercely independent artist who is so particular about her material that she has only made two features to date: 1999's Boys Don't Cry (which garnered Hilary Swank her first Oscar) and 2008's daring Iraq War-era film Stop Loss. Pierce has teamed up with one of the most respected actress working in Hollywood today, Julianne Moore, as well as one of the brightest young talents of its next generation, Chloë Grace Moretz.

The result is a new interpretation of the Carrie saga that is entirely female-driven. And if you think that means its going to be softer or more timid, well, then you don't know Pierce, Moore, Moretz-or Carrie-very well at all.

Carrie hits theaters October 18th. For more on the film, and to get a look at its trailer, be sure to visit its official site here.
