Yesterday, the White House budget office revealed more details regarding the economic devastation created by the federal government shutdown. With 850,000 federal workers furloughed, 6.6 million work days were lost. Congress rightfully elected to pay them $2 billion, which taxpayers will have to pay for. Some federal contractors furloughed during the 16-day shutdown may never receive back pay.

Furthermore, the shutdown killed some 120,000 private sector jobs, put $140 million worth of small-business loans on hold, delayed $4 billion in tax refunds and ultimately resulted in a $500 million loss in visitor spending. It's the gift that just jeeps on giving.
