It was all good just eight years ago, on [top of] Oprah's couch. Tom Cruise is suing Bauer media for a cool $50 million, citing defamation over their claim that he "abandoned" Suri Cruise. During a deposition which has since been obatined by Radar Online, things got very awkward and explosive when the hotly gossiped about subject of Cruise's Scientology religion came up.

It starts when lawyers ask if Katie Holmes filed for divorce to "protect Suri from Scientology." Tom's defensive reply: "There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion." But later he clarifies: "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes." The Scientology jokes always seemed like a dead horse, but it looks like the gossip rags were right about this one.

He also admits that Suri is no longer a Scientologist, which is apparently a big deal because when someone abandons the faith, rules dictate that that "Suppressive Person" be cut off from all members forever, including immediate family. Will Tom become a "Suppressive" for the sake of seeing his daughter? Or will the church bend the rules for one of Hollywood's biggest A-listers? Is there any hope of normalcy in Suri Cruise's future?
