The big selling point behind 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past is that director Bryan Singer is returning to combine the cast of his original X-Men films and their younger selves from X-Men: First Class. Unfortunately one of the classic mutants won’t make the cut. According to Entertainment Weekly, Singer cut a crucial rescue sequence from the movie that was to be the only scene featuring Anna Paquin as Rogue.

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” Singer told the site. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

With a cast including more than a dozen mutants, it makes sense that some would be pushed aside in favor of more important characters. Apparently Rouge’s character was deemed expendable by Singer and his team. While fans may be disappointed, Rogue wasn’t even created when the original Days of Future Past story hit shelves, so it’s not like the movie is ignoring canon.

You can see which X-Men made the cut when Days of Future Past hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
