A gamer in New York has secured a spot in the Guinness World Records 2014: Gamer's Edition with a all-encompassing video game collection with 10,607 titles. The collection is actually closer to 11,000 after collector Michael Thomasson found more games in his Buffalo, New York home after Guinness World Records completed the count. Thomasson's collection is estimated to be worth between $700,000 and $800,000 and spans formats from laser disc to the Pippin.
"I have games on cartridge, laser disc. I have VHS-based games, cassette-based games," Thomasson said. In addition to main-stream consoles the collection also includes the rare, like the Casio Loopy, and the terrible like Apple's failed Pippin. "Every game on it is awful," Thomasson says of Apple's attempt at a gaming console. "It's the least fun of anything in the house."
Thomasson has been collecting his entire life but has restarted a couple of times. First selling off a burgeoning collection in 1989 to raise cash for a Sega Genesis, then again in 1998 to pay for his wedding. Now he continues to collect by purchasing about two games a day on a budget of about $3,000 a year.
Thomasson teaches courses on 2D animation, game design, and video game history at Canisius College in Buffalo. Which means he can call his collection research, genius.
