James Avery of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" Has Died

James Avery, best known for playing Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has died at the age of 65. According to TMZ, the actor passed away last night at an L.A. hospital, where he was being held after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed illness. 

Former Fresh Prince co-star Alfonso Ribeiro confirmed the news via Twitter.

From 1990 to 1996, the actor charmed audiences as Will Smith's tough but lovable uncle on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Additionally, he lent his powerful voice to the role of Shredder in the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. His last credited role is the 2013 TV movie Go, Bolivia, Go!.

Avery is survived by his wife Barbara.
