It looks like Paramount Pictures could be the first major Hollywood studio to abandon film. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, which cites unnamed sources, Paramount will be going digital-only for U.S. theater releases. The studio will continue to distribute movies in film format overseas.

The Wolf of Wall Street was reportedly Paramount's first digital-only release, and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was the last film to have been distributed in both digital and analog formats. The switch to digital was bound to happen eventually, given the fact that 92 percent of US cinemas are equipped to handle digital projection. It's a sad day for drive-ins and independent theaters who might not be able to afford to invest in digital technology just yet.
