Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2013 thanks to its gritty, unrelenting portrait of slavery, and its source material, an autobiography of the same name published in 1853 by Solomon Northup, is no different. To pay tribute to the legendary piece of literature, as well as the film that followed, The Hollywood Reporter tracked down 46 of Northup's living descendants, and took a series of amazing portraits of them. Most noteworthy feature: The portraits are a fascinating look at lineage, as Northup's family tree has a breadth of diversity—both geographical and racial.
