"Kodoku": Bringing Back Traditional Japanese Horror In Grotesque Fashion

Anime and "Siren" fans, take heed.

None

London-based developer Carnivore Studio has officially unveiled a new Japanese-styled horror game, Kodoku, and if you're a fan of disturbing anime or Sony's own (dormant) Siren series, this early glimpse seems to be pretty promising. Instead of taking a Western approach to what's become something of an action sub-genre in recent years, Kodoku has you using a combination of stealth and strategy to survive on a Japanese island filled with horrifying Lovecraftian creatures based out of Japan's native folklore.

Carnivore previously released a teaser for the game, showing off putrid insectoid creatures and hogs with human skulls, among other grotesqueries. With the focus on exploration of space as well as genre, Kodoku sounds like its shaping up to be quite a psychological nightmare, but what really sells it is the horrifying art direction reminiscent of Ninja Scroll – which itself had no shortage of disgusting mythic monsters. Among the few screenshots provided, there's a bathhouse filled with huge bugs, some concept art for a hospital room with...growths on its beds and the mutated monstrosity above, among others.

The PS4 continues to prove its value as an indie machine pumping out all manner of drastically varied experiences, so here's hoping that Kodoku can provide some needed blood to the ailing horror genre. It certain sounds like it could.
