The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still a ways off, but Sony is apparently comfortable enough with the job that director Marc Webb has done for the web-head that the studio has already given him a deal to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, according to Variety. This will now be the second complete Spider-Man trilogy that actually managed to keep a consistent director on the project throughout the entire series. That’s a rare feat in the superhero genre.

The Variety article also has a quote from Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chariman, Amy Pascal, who said, “We are expanding the Spider-Man universe into The Sinister Six and Venom, so that we have Spider-Man movies every year.”

That’s right, every year will now feature a Spider-Man movie in some shape or form. Unfortunately the Spider-Man universe isn’t as rich as the Avengers or DC universe, so it looks like the studio will need to focus on his villains for spin-off fodder.

Despite Venom having his own comic book series in the past, the idea of putting the spotlight on the villains is untested waters on the big screen. Plus, the returns on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 3 might not even be enough to justify more movies. Then again, Sony has no other live-action franchise to fall back on. And it's not like Hollywood is in the business of coming up with something new.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit theaters on May 2.
