When 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture at the Academy Awards Sunday night, it was a milestone. The crowning of the film marked the first time a project directed by a black man took home the honor and it seems that factor was in the back of a couple of Oscar voters' minds. The LA Timesreports that "two Oscar voters privately admitted that they didn't see 12 Years a Slave, thinking it would be upsetting. But they said they voted for it anyway because, given the film's social relevance, they felt obligated to do so."
Well, 12 Years a Slavecontinues to grab a few of headlines this week, but as one of the film's producers, Brad Pitt puts it, controversy or none:
"At the end of the day we just hope that this film remains a gentle reminder that we're all equal. We want dignity and opportunity for ourselves and our family, and that another's freedom is every bit as important as our own. That's it. That's everything."
