Big news: According to an announcement on the official Star Wars website, Chronicle and The Fantastic Four director Josh Trank has been recruited to direct an upcoming stand-alone Star Wars spinoff film, which will be released some time after Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters. As previously reported, Disney and Lucasfilm plan to produce multiple stand-alone films taking place within the Star Wars universe, which will all be released between new installments of the original series.

"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

It's not clear which stand-alone film Trank will be directing, but EW reports that Disney and Lucasfilm have plans for one about a young Han Solo, and one about Boba Fett.
