Chun-Li was the bane of my childhood. My sister and I played countless Street Fighter II: The World Warrior matches against one another, and aside from occasionally picking Ken, my sister always selected Chun-Li. Match, after match, after match. There was no one quicker and no one who could jump higher than Chun-Li, and I responded the only way I could—by picking E. Honda. Honda was Chun’s polar opposite, and he allowed me to grab and chop her out of the air. Of course, I had to catch her first, which was easier said than done.

Chun-Li has become iconic. Aside from Lara Croft, she’s probably the most recognizable female video game character. It’s a combination of things—her nimbleness, her sexiness, her power, and her take-no-shit attitude—that has made her endure for close to 25 years. In anticipation of Ultra Street Fighter IV, we’re taking a look back at the highs (and lows) of an incredible video game character. Yatta!
