Authorities say a Bronx high school student committed suicide after she was caught cheating on a test.

The New York Post reports that 17-year-old Omotayo Adeoye, a student at the Harlem's High School for Math, Science and Engineering, was caught looking at her phone during a German exam on Thursday. According to the Post, her teacher, Eva Malikova, began berating her: "Oh, you shouldn’t be cheating! You guys shouldn’t be cheating!" she allegedly said. "You guys are lying to yourselves!"

When Adeoye exploded into tears and began apologizing, Malikova allegedly continued to scold her, saying: "That’s not a sincere apology!" That's when law enforcement officials say Adeoye wrote a note on the exam saying: "I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the river."

Adeoye asked to use the bathroom and never returned to class. She was seen walking to the edge of the Hudson River, where the Post says fisherman watched her jump into the water, adding that she appeared to be "forcing herself down." What's more, her father told police that she did not know how to swim. Witnesses say her head surfaced briefly before she was immersed.

Her body hasn't been recovered, but the Department of Education told the Post this would be the 14th public school student suicide of the year.
