"Dragon Age Inquisition" Will Feature First Fully Gay Character From Developer BioWare

Dragon Age Inquisition, the upcoming title from BioWare, will feature the first fully gay character.

None

BioWare has a longstanding tradition of being at the forefront of creating characters with the ability to explore sexual preference and gender binaries in their titles.

Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age has all been noticeably progressive in terms of allowing players to choose to engage in same-sex relationships. After a post yesterday on the site Eurogamer, a character profile for one party member, Dorian, clarified that the character will be 'fully gay'. Dragon Age Inquisition writer, David Gaider, went on,

"Dorian is gay—he is, in fact, the first fully gay character I've had the opportunity to write. It added an interesting dimension to his back story, considering he comes from a place where "perfection" is the face that every mage puts on and anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden. Dorian's refusal to play along with that façade is seen as stubborn and pointless by his family, which has contributed to his status as a pariah."

BioWare has created characters in the past that were considered to be 'fully gay'. The female character Juhani in Knights of the Old Republic was intended to be a lesbian, but a bug in the code allowed her to romance male characters as well.

Some bristled at the 'fully gay' label and Gaider further clairified that it was meant to distinguish the character from other bi-sexual characters from past games.

@thesunnyamazon I meant "legitimately", sorry. I was trying to be clear--many people consider the bi characters we've done to be "gay".

Either way, this is progress in terms of representation and equality in the field of video games and it's great to see BioWare continue to write interesting and diverse characters into their titles.
