Even an electronics giant like Sony has problems wading through the flood of spam and junk email that pours into their inbox everyday. Apparently the company had so much trouble filtering their emails that it caused them to miss shut-off notices to their domain name services after bills from DNS providers were being left unpaid. As a result, certain sites like www.soe.com and www.sonyonline.net were mysteriously inactive when users tried to access them. Additionally, websites related to games like EverQuest, Everquest 2, Landmark and H1Z1 were also impacted.
John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment, tweeted a number of explanations for the incident:
Sorry for the dns problems folks. Wont happen again. Notices sent to wrong email. Doh
DNS issues may take up to 48 hours to resolve. We are really really sorry on this one folks. Embarrassing and preventable. We screwed up
@ivlev_alex yeah. someone left and it got caught in the replacements junk filter. Simple as that. Embarrassing as that. no point dodging
You have to appreciate Smedley's honesty, and his willingness to acknowledge the egg currently on Sony's face as a result of this mistake. The errors have been corrected and are being rectified accordingly, but it's hilariously ironic that a company of Sony's stature could struggle with something as simple as e-payments.
