In audio reportedly recorded hours before the devastating Sep. 11 attacks, former President Bill Clinton can be heard saying that he had the opportunity to kill Osama bin Laden, but elected not to.

According to ABC News, Clinton explains that he chose not to kill bin Laden because it would've involved killing hundreds of innocent people in the process:

And I’m just saying, you know, if I were Osama bin Laden … He’s a very smart guy. I spent a lot of time thinking about him. And I nearly got him once. I nearly got him. And I could have killed him, but I would have had to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him. And so I didn't do it.

ABC News adds that Clinton's remarks reference a mission that would've taken place in December 1998, when Clinton received information from reliable sources saying bin Laden was stationed in Kandahar.
