Here it is: definitive proof that John Cusack doesn’t always have to be folksy and charming. He can also be super creepy.
In this trailer for Reclaim, we get to find out what happens when Cusack runs an adoption scam that takes two unwitting would-be parents (Ryan Phillippe and Rachelle Lefevre), lures them to Puerto Rico and gets them to give up $60,000 in cash to “adopt” a child, then takes the kid in the middle of the night. When Phillippe and Lefevre fight back, Cusack responds with anxious, fast talking (classic Cusack) and plenty of violence (less classic).
It probably won’t help Phillippe and Lefevre that the only cop on their side is Luis Guzman, whose career in on-screen law enforcement consists of a debauched performance in We’re the Millers.
This Cusack character turn kind of makes us wonder what would happen if his other on-screen performances had had a bit more edge to them. Although, without his signature Cusackian (who cares if that isn’t a word? We’re making it one) brand of self-deprecation and neuroticism, what is he? Just some guy with great hair, we suspect.
Stop confusing us, John. We miss the old you.
