Tom Hiddleston—whom many know as Loki from both Thor movies as well as The Avengers—is slated to star in the surprise King Kong reboot Skull Island, which was just announced at Comic-Con. Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) is slated to direct, with Godzilla scribe Max Borenstein writing.

While details of the movie are scant at best, Hiddleston is an outstanding choice to lead what may become a franchise that (fingers crossed) could one day intersect with the recently-rebooted Godzilla. Given that they have the same writers, a Godzilla/King Kong movie would seem like a natural fit.

In a statement, Universal says of the movie that:

“Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”

As long as we avoid another three-plus hour marathon with Jack Black and a shrieking Naomi Watts, this sounds like an improvement.
