Colin Farrell took it upon himself to confirm his casting in Season Two of True Detective in an interview with Sunday World this weekend, and it seems that that move forced HBO's hand.

Today, the network finally opened up about the next season of the hit show and admitted that not only would Farrell be starring, but Vince Vaughn—another rumored casting—would be too. Additionally, HBO confirmed another rumor, that Fast & Furious director, Justin Lin, would be directing episodes—the first two to be specific.

According to the press release, Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, a life-long criminal attempting to turn honest until a business partner's murder pulls him back in. Farrell meanwhile, will play Ray Velcoro (Velcro? Velcoro? Velcro.), a detective who's caught in the middle between corrupt police and the mob.

Gotta say, this is sort of a shocker. Farrell is somewhat understandable—we've seen him do grimy and weird before—but Vaughn has spent most of the last decade playing overgrown children in mediocre-to-bad comedies. Then again, who was praising Matthew McConaughey in the months before True Detective Season One began filming?

Now it's on to that female casting news. HBO didn't confirm anything in their press release, but rumor has it that the list is down to seven actress.
