Redbox helped kill off Blockbuster. Netflix (and maybe HBO Go) might help bring about the death Redbox someday. It's the circle of life.

For now, those infuriating, red, disc-filled kiosks that always give the last copy of whatever DVD you want to the guy in line ahead of you, are safe. Redbox Instant, however, is soon to be dead.

Redbox Instant will shut down permanently on Tuesday, only a year and a half after the streaming, on demand video service launched to compete with Netflix (uh, you probably don't want to compete with Netflix?).

In other breaking news, Redbox had a streaming service. Who knew? That's probably why its shutting down.

Redbox Instant posted on its website:

Information on applicable refunds will be emailed to current customers and posted here on October 10.

In the meantime, you may continue to stream movies and use your Redbox kiosk credits until Tuesday, October 7 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.

We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank you for the opportunity to entertain you.
