This first glimpse at the highly-anticipated remake of The Gambler doesn’t suggest a ton in the way of plot, but it does give us one thing everybody loves: John Goodman swearing. A lot.
This Rupert Wyatt-directed version stars Mark Wahlberg as the titular gambler, a man whose talents (gasp!) sometimes get him in with the wrong crowd. The chief antagonists seem to be a gangster played by Michael K. Williams and Wahlberg’s own mother, played by Jessica Lange. Goodman’s role seems to be dispensing invaluable lessons about being able to say “fuck you” to anyone, at any time.
The movie comes out on December 19, which means the studio thinks it will be a contender for major awards. While that remains to be seen, this first look is pretty appetizing.
