On Monday, a video showing an actress pretending to be drunk and having guys try to lure her home went viral. While it seemed suspicious that so many guys would try to take advantage of a woman so clearly impaired, it also resonated as one of the potentially serious outcomes of street harassment.
1.
Well, it turns out it was all a hoax.
Creators Stephen Zhang and Seth Leach didn’t just hire an actress to be their “drunk girl;” they also hired guys who worked in the area to take part in what they said was a “hidden camera student video” that was “comedic” in nature. The only problem was, they didn’t really do the “gotcha” moment that turns “creepy stalker video” into “hidden camera hilarity.”
Understandably, the guys who were misled into doing the video are not happy. For some, their jobs and friendships have been seriously affected. But no matter, said Leach to one of them in a Facebook message, “We are going to be huge and you are apart of it. Just go with it dude, you are in our team now and we will take care of you.”
Um, how?
Could Zhang and Leach have gotten the same results if they had simply filmed for longer and not used actors? Probably. But obviously, having a grip on reality clearly is not their strength.
