Shocker: "Mockingjay: Part 1" Had the Biggest Opening of 2014

Hard to believe, right?

1.

In new that should surprise no one, the latest Hunger Games installment has had the biggest box office opening of 2014—but still the lowest in franchise history. The YA dystopian epic opened to $55 million and is on track to make at least $125 million this weekend. The top spot was held by Transformers: Age of Extinction, which opened to "only" $41.9 million.

Following its bretheren in YA fiction, Harry Potter and Twilight, the Hunger Games has split its final book into two movies. Although director Francis Lawrence shot the last two films back-to-back for about $250 million, we won't see the last of Katnis (Jennifer Lawrence) until November of 2015. For all we know, Jennifer Lawrence may have won another Oscar by then!

Big Hero 6 came in at number two, followed by Interstellar and Dumb and Dumber To.
