President Obama spoke out in favor of net neutrality today when he urged the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to reclassify the internet as a utility in order to protect net neutrality

This sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo if you have no idea what net neutrality means or what the debate surrounding it is that’s been taking place over the last few months with big name supporters like Netflix and Tumblr

In short, net neutrality is the idea of a “free and open”—as Obama called it— internet for everyone. Meaning that Internet Service Providers, such as Comcast and Verizon, have no control over all of the RKO videos you’re watching. You see, there’s this thing proposed where ISPs would charge users extra for different kinds of internet access much like cable companies charge people absurd amounts for special channel packages.

The decision on net neutrality was expected for the end of this year, but the FCC is now saying it needs more time. Watch President Obama talk more on net neutrality above.
